Ekukhanyeni is in the heart of Diepkloof hostels in Soweto. Gogo Sylvia and her team and in dire need of help. The community is impoverished with the crèche being more of a daycare centre than a nursery school. Parents are able to pay very little and this goes towards feeding over 40 children lunch and a snack every day.
Over the past year, in partnership with a local school, we have repainted and repaired the main container that is used as a classroom. We have also helped replace the astro and change the jungle gyms. There are many needs and our main focus at the moment is to replace the three wooden structures that are used as a kitchen, a classroom and storage. The current structures are falling apart and unsafe. The community still uses shared pit latrines and the children have little portable loos that are emptied into the latrines at the end of the day. We would also like to install a more hygienic and permanent solution for the children.
Over the years we have fed and clothed the homeless as well as donated clothing and food packs to various homes, shelters and organizations. We do this on a continuous basis, as and when we have the means to.
